USB to Ethernet adapter problems

I experienced some problems with the USB to Ethernet adapter on my MacBook Air and on the MacBook: the adapter was not seen at all. Here the solution I found out:
plug the ethernet cord into the adapter, wait a second or two, then plug the adapter into the MacBook. Disable the AirPort and create a new Location.
Suddenly the MacBook will recognize the adapter; you don't need to save the new Location, just discharge it. Now you can add it to the devices.
